As expected Macau casino gross revenues did hit a record MOP11.27 billion (US$1.4billion)  last month, the highest monthly revenue ever recorded. The previous monthly record was held by January 2008 at MOP10.33 (US$1.29billion).

The August results also represent a 17.3 percent growth compared to the same month last year, when gross receipts totalled MOP9.57 billion (US$1.2billion).

Stanley Ho Hung-sun’s Sociedade de Jogos de Macau - which runs 18 casinos – kept its position as market leader with a 26 percent share, followed by Las Vegas Sands with a 24 percent share.

Melco Crown comes in third with a market share of 16 percent. Wynn’s single casino operation follows with a 13 percent share and MGM, which also runs only one casino, recorded an 11 percent share. Galaxy’s five casinos came in last with a share of 10 percent.
Analysts see the consecutive revenue growth in July and August as a sign of recovery after a period of negative growth.

Others see it as the result of the opening of the City of Dreams gaming complex, in June, and the re-opening of the Kingsway casino under its new Lan Kwai Fong name, which raised to 32 the number of casino licences in Macau.

The gaming growth comes as Macau’s GDP contracted 13.7 percent in real terms, which was the worst decrease since the compilation of the quarterly GDP.
