The managing director of Las Vegas Sands Corporation’s Macau operations, Jorge Neto Valente has resigned amidst disagreement over the company’s management direction, according to several sources from the gambling industry. Mr Valente has held the role with the company since it began operations in the SAR and has also acted as its general counsel.
While Mr Valente is understood to have resigned his management position, the MDTimes has been told he will continue to “spearhead the company’s legal and government relations functions”, as according to a position description from an earlier Sand’s press release. The decision to resign was due to Mr Valente’s strong disagreement with the US-based company’s management style and intended direction, according to industry sources.
The MDTimes spoke with Mr Valente in order to clarify the situation and his position, however he quickly terminated the call. It is understood that this is not the first time he has had strong disagreements with the company, however, according to sources, the latest dispute appears to be irreconcilable.
When asked about the resignation last week, Las Vegas Sands Corporation Asian region president, Stephen Weaver said, “I’m not able to confirm that, people get unhappy or disagree with people from time to time.” Although stating Mr Valente “was still our managing director, he is still our general counsel,” Mr Weaver suggested there could be further information to come. “Watch this space, I don’t think there is anything going on that is of interest at this time,” he said.
